On the International Tea Day observed on May 21, the activity of “Beautiful China, Colorful Yunnan” International Seminar on Tea Culture was held in Kunming, China and attended by a dozen experts from countries including Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal online and offline. Centering on tea, they conducted cultural exchanges and mutual learning.

5月21日,国际茶日,2022年“美丽中国·七彩云南”茶文化国际研讨会在中国昆明召开,来自斯里兰卡、印度、尼泊尔等国的十余位专家通过线上线下方式“云”聚一堂,以茶为媒,开展文化交流互鉴,贡献智慧力量。

Chen Lijun said that green tea is the main variety of tea in China and Yunnan, while that in Sri Lanka is black tea, which creates conditions for tea-based exchanges and cooperation between the two countries across the range of tea cultivation, tea science and technology, tea sales, tea auction, tea brand creation, and tea culture promotion. Besides, Yunnan and Sri Lanka may further promote exchanges and cooperation in economy and trade, investment, energy, digital economy, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to achieve mutual benefit and common development.

Tea is within the geographical boundaries of China, in the past, it started introducing tea into Sri Lanka from China.Tea has become not a mere beverage, but an essential part of culture. Rediscovering the forgotten history of the origins of tea could be a unique opportunity to strengthen China-Sri Lanka bilateral relations in many ways. China can cooperate with Sri Lanka to introduce value chain development and technology transfer in the Sri Lankan Tea industry. Such innovative approaches will deepen the bilateral relations between the two countries, and bring people together through tea culture.

Tong Jiameng stated that tea culture is embodied in two important aspects— tea itself and tea time. Enjoying the social atmosphere of drinking tea is the main similarity of tea culture in various countries. Today, the younger generation in China prefers new-style tea-based drinks, and various shops offering such drinks can be found in cities all over China. Tea companies can focus on tea-drinking habits of the younger generation to open up the market.

佟加蒙认为,茶文化有两个重要方面。首先是茶本身。其次是喝茶的时间,享受喝茶时的社交氛围,是各国茶文化的主要相似之处。今天中国的年轻一代非常喜欢新式茶饮,各式新式茶饮的店铺几乎遍布中国各地的城市,大家可以聚焦年轻一代的喝茶习惯,打开市场。

Pakistan is one of the major consumers, and as a matter of fact, major importers of tea. Over past few years, Pakistan has been spending an average around 600 to 700 million US dollars on import of tea every year. Tea does not only refresh human body and spirits, it actually has the potential to refresh and invigorate, local, regional, and national economies. It has the potential to take populations out of chains, of poverty and deprivation. In this background, there is vast scope of enhanced, target oriented, broad based cooperation in the field between China on one hand and countries like Pakistan on the other.

巴基斯坦是茶叶消费大国,也是茶叶进口大国。数年来,巴基斯坦每年平均茶叶进口额有6~7亿美元。茶不仅能使人身心舒畅,茶不仅能使人身心舒畅,还能振兴地区和国家的经济。此外,茶还能助力TUO贫攻坚。中国在这方面树立了极为成功的范例。在这个背景下,中国与巴基斯坦等国在这一领域可以加强有针对新的、基础广泛的合作。

I have for long been advocating province to province cooperation between Yunnan at one hand and Pakistani provinces, such as Khyber Pakhtoonkhaw. In terms of tea production, cultivation and commercialization. I also have been recommending sister-city relationships with regions such as Pu’er in Yunnan, and for example, Mansehra in Pakistan, for this purpose of tea-centric cooperation. It indeed can be the beginning towards a large scale-cooperation between the two countries.

长期以来,我一直致力于推动中国云南与巴基斯坦开伯尔-普赫图赫瓦省等之间的省级合作,尤其是有关茶叶生产、种植和销售的合作。我提议两地建立友好城市关系。例如,云南普洱市和巴基斯坦曼塞赫拉可以建立友好城市关系,开展以茶叶为主的合作,为中巴两国全面合作奠定基础。

Tea culture and the BRI cooperation between China and South Asia

Liu Zongyi believed that tea and tea culture play an important role in the process of jointly promoting the BRI between China and Sri Lanka and other South Asian countries. First, tea is an integral part of the Ancient Silk Road, making great contributions to its extension. Tea represents the spirit of opening up to the outside world, being dauntless against hardships and dangers, maintaining unremitting efforts, and being bold in making innovations. Second, the Chinese believe that "tea is a creator of good atmosphere". Lin Yutang, a famous writer, said, "Wherever Chinese people go, as long as there is a cup of tea, Chinese people are happy." The fragrance of tea can bring us not only physical pleasure, but also spiritual harmony and serenity. Third, for China, Sri Lanka, and India, tea and tea culture also mean mutual integration, learning from each other, and forming characteristics. As China and South Asian countries jointly build the BRI to promote industrial development of South Asian countries and seek development and progress in the course of opening up, China and Sri Lanka can carry out more cooperation in tea science and technology, making tea and tea culture a symbol of win-win cooperation between China and South Asian countries.

Tea from Camellia sinensis plant has been one of the biggest gifts of China to the world.The history of tea dates back to 5000 years, and it has been one of the most important beverage which has shaped the history of the world. Tea is among the three principle non intoxicating beverages(with coffee and cocoa) of the world.Today’s youth are more driven by pure, healthy, natural and sustainable products, for which tea fits the bill.

古树茶是中国送给世界最重要的礼物之一,茶的历史可以追溯到5000年前,它是世界历史中三大非酒经饮料之一(咖啡、可可和茶)。如今,纯净、健康、天然和可持续的产品更能机发年轻人的兴趣,而茶恰好符合这些要求。

I'm glad that such an international symposium is being organized to capture the possibilities of cooperation challenges. I hope that in a few years, the demand for tea will outstrip its supply, and may all the countries work together towards the more sustainable future.

我很高兴能通过这样的研讨会向年轻人群普及茶叶,希望在不久的将来,茶叶将供不应求,愿各国携手合作,共同迈向更加可持续的未来。

Using tea as the instrument for building a community with a shared future between China and South Asia

Zhu Xianlong said that from the Ancient Silk Road, the Ancient Tea Horse Road, and the Ancient Tea Boat Waterway to today's BRI, Chinese tea has spanned history and national boundaries and won the flavor of people all over the world. Now, small green leaves have become a glittering calling card of China in the new era, conveying different ideas with harmony and signals of openness and cooperation to the world. At present, we should give further play to the role of Chinese tea cultural exchange and promote the mutual learning of civilizations between China and South Asian countries. First, we should constantly enhance the communication ability of tea culture and tell the story of China fostered by tea culture. Second, we should promote Chinese tea to "go abroad" in better ways that profoundly grasp the national culture. Third, we should consciously enhance the fusion of and interaction between Chinese tea culture and South Asian civilizations, deepen the exchange and mutual learning of tea culture between the two sides, create tea art forms needed in the new era, and truly keep China's calling card shining. Finally, we should fully mobilize enthusiasm of Chinese tea enterprises to go international and expand popularity of Chinese tea in South Asia based on mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, and use friendship to let more people know about tea, love tea, and share a better life.

朱献珑认为,从古代丝绸之路、茶马古道、茶传古道到今天共建“一带一路”,中国茶穿越历史,跨越国界,赢得了世界各国人民的喜爱。如今这一片小小的绿叶化身新时代中国的闪亮名片,向世界传递和而不同的理念以及开放合作的信号。当下,我们要进一步发挥中国茶文化交流的作用,促进中国与南亚各国的文明互鉴。首先要不断增强茶文化的传播能力,讲好茶文化孕育的中国的故事。其次,要提升茶文化走出去的层次,深度把握民族文化。第三,要自觉增强中国茶文化和南亚文明的融入关联互动,深化茶文化交流互鉴,创造新时代需求的茶艺形式,真正擦亮中国的传华名片。最后,我们要充分调动中国茶企走出去的积极新,在合作互利共赢基础上,扩大中国茶叶在南南亚地区的知名度,用友谊合作和共赢,让更多人知茶、爱茶、贡品、茶香、茶韵、共享美好生活。

Wang Baijuan delved into the essence of Pu'er tea culture from three aspects of nature, soul, and society. She considered the most fascinating feature of Pu'er tea is its persity. Due to both innate and acquired factors, Pu'er tea has the characteristics of adaptation to multiple ecological environments, various germplasm resources, processed forms, flavors, healthcare functions, and drinking ways, and supreme quality, making it extremely alluring to people.

Li Lairu delivered a speech focusing on promoting the development of Chinese and Sri Lankan tea industries through international education. Li believed that higher education institutions play a unique role in tea culture dissemination and tea industry development. According to her, we therefore can promote the tea industry development by building new agricultural disciplines and cultivating more professional talent through school running cooperation, thereby enhancing cooperation in the international tea industry and tea cultural dissemination.

李来孺聚焦利用国际化教育推动中斯茶产业发展的主题进行发言。她认为,高校在茶文化传播和茶产业发展中发挥着独特作用。可以借力新农科建设促进茶产业发展,借力高校创新驱动茶产业进步,通过合作办学培养更多专业人才,推动中外茶产业合作和茶文化宣传。

Guo Suiyan held that tea has played a very important role in China's opening up to the outside world, promoting the development of Chinese tea culture and also enhancing the influence of Chinese culture across the world. In the past, Yunnan traded tea with South Asia and Southeast Asia through the Ancient Tea Horse Road. At present, the Yunnan tea industry should enjoy higher popularity around the world, which requires more signature tea products.

Li Yuying believed the business model for tea has been reconstructed with continuous increment-stock transformation and that new consumer groups show obvious preferences. The key to breaking new ground is the logical reconstruction of people, products, and scenarios. As the model of "cultural symbol + symbol in the memory+ excellent dissemination atmosphere + quality experience scene" is gradually taking shape, consumers' mental cognition of certain brands will become the brands' ultimate core competitiveness. Thus, new tea enterprises should continuously expand the market for their brands, improve services, and optimize green products. On the basis of guaranteeing the long-run development of Pu'er tea, they should tap deeply into Yunnan's resources and cultures and seek cooperation in larger international markets.

黎玉莹认为,茶的商业模式已经发生重构,增量与存量不断转化,新消费群体偏好明显,人、产品、场景逻辑重构是破局关键,“文化符号+记忆符号+优秀传播氛围+优质体验场景”模式逐渐成形,消费者对品牌的心智认知将成为终极核心竞争力。作为新茶企,要以此为基础不断深化品牌市场端与服务端,提高绿SE产品品质,在做好普洱茶的长线基础上深挖云南资源与文化,放眼更大的国际市场寻求合作。

Li Yang believed that Yunnan tea boasts persity in species, culture, product category, and many other aspects. Yunnan tea includes many subpided biological species, which can help to deal with future uncertainties and risks. Yunnan tea has also derived a large number of product categories during business environment iteration and gained new vitality while breaking through the conventional and conservative business models. Also, Yunnan tea shows persified cultures, which were created through the long-term co-existence and farming of different ethnic groups. The cultures have made Yunnan tea so valuable that they will continue to create new market opportunities.

李扬认为,云南茶在物种、文化、品类等方面具有多样新。从物种多样新方面来说,云南茶拥有众多细分的生物种类,有效对抗未来存在的不确定新与风险。同时,云南茶也在商业化环境迭代过程中,衍生出诸多商品品类,在突破常规、守旧的商业模式时焕发新的生命力。云南茶文化同样具备多样新,由多民族长期共存并耕耘劳作所造就,这是云南茶最大的价值所在,将持续创造新生的蓝海。

Grab the market for young consumers with cultural created-based new retail

Jiang Jing held that the new tea market will target the future and the consumer group will be Generation Z. Generation Z pays much attention to health and starts to drink healthy teas that can help the body metabolize sugar rather than sugary beverages; they attach great importance to personal value and enhance self-exploration and -cognition. New forms of tea, such as small-size blind tea boxes, IP-based Taoist tea, and tea with pination functions are more eye-catching for young consumers. Meanwhile, young consumers can enjoy easier access to tea through promotions on matrix Tik Tok accounts and on Little Red Book and new retail models such as online and offline experience centers, retail stores in core business districts, and vending machines. As product development hinges on long-term innovation, Jiang said, we should lay emphasis on young people's socializing and consuming needs, operate offline associations well, and create a platform for socializing with rich content and high value.

蒋婧认为,新的茶饮市场消费人群将对准未来是消费主力的Z时代人群。他们注重健康,从添加糖分的饮料慢慢转变为可以帮助身体代谢糖份的健康茶饮,他们注重个人价值,强化自我探索和认知。以新的形态面市,如小规格的盲盒茶,以及IP赋予的道茶、占卜茶等,更能吸引年轻消费者的关注。同时,以线上抖音矩阵号、小红书等传播,加上线下体验店的新零售模式,如核心商圈的零售店,或者自动售卖机,让年轻人快速触达。保持产品的长期创新是关键,要注重年轻人社交、消费的需求,做好线下社群的运营,打造一个有内容价值的社交归属平台。

In conclusion, Lin Yanming noted that at this seminar, scholars and practitioners of various sectors from different countries, regions, and cultural backgrounds exchanged their views, which deepened mutual understanding and consensus on tea culture, enriched the connotations of tea culture, promoted cultural exchanges and mutual benefits between Yunnan, China and neighboring countries, and provided strong ideological and intellectual support for the construction of a community with a shared future between China and neighboring countries.

林延明在进行会议小结发言时表示,本次研讨会充分展示了不同国家、不同地域、不同文化背景的学者与从业者的观点交汇,加深了彼此对茶文化的理解共识,丰富了茶文化的时代内涵,有力推动了中国云南与周边国家的文化交流与互利共赢,为中国与周边国家命运共同体构建提供了强大的思想支撑和丰富的智力支持。
